Who We Are Nearly three years ago, I worked with another woman to to start a support group for families of inmates. We gave up after advertising several meetings and making contacts with outside agencies. Last year, I noticed how several of us visitors were bonding and talking more prior to visits; all of us concerned about the lack of medical care and other issues affecting our loved ones at the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln.
Our Vision Our vision is two-fold: One is to offer encouragement and support to families of inmates, answering questons and providing orientation from our own experience. Another goal is to form a mentoring partnership to help first-time visitors, giving them someone they can call and talk to.
Types Of Activity Monthly business/educational meeting on the fourth Monday of each month. Annual picnic, which we hope to expand to a monthly potluck dinner or informal get-together.
Public fundraising concerts coordinated with performers who are asked to perform at the penitentiary. We participate on panels spnsored by the Restorative Justice Program.
Location We invite all families and friends who know someone locked up in one of Nebraska's correctional facilities in Omaha, York, Hastings, Lincoln, and the county jails.
About Our Prison Ministry We open our meetings with readings from CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE PRISONER'S SOUL or other inspirational prison-related stories or poetry, if you would like to share a story of your own.
Support In Donated inspiration prison-related materials or materials referencing the positive effect of family and a supportive community on prisoners.
