Who We Are

The Western Virginia Regional Jail is a state-of-the-art jail facility of approximately 264,000 square feet with a rated capacity for 605 inmates with another 200 beds double-bunked for a total of 805 inmates. It was built by coalition of four localities that formed the Western Virginia Regional Jail Authority—the counties of Franklin, Montgomery, and Roanoke and the city of Salem. Our facility, which opened its doors on April 9, 2009.

Our Vision

The Western Virginia Regional Jail’s mission is to maintain the custody, control, and care of persons confined in the jail in a safe, secure, and constitutional manner. It is our intention to operate our facility as a progressive correctional organization using the best practices that modern corrections has to offer.

About Our Prison Ministry

The Western Virginia Regional Jail is committed to excellence. The Agency is accredited by the Virginia Department of Corrections and nationally accredited by the American Correctional Association. Our facility is also LEED® certified making us the first correctional facility in Virginia to receive LEED® certification and one of the first in the United States.
